1200 homes and businesses sustained varying degrees of damage. 101 of the 1200 were totally destroyed and 573 sustained major damage. Heavy damage occurred to Apollo High School, Kentucky Wesleyan College and a Winn-Dixie. Numerous automobiles were tossed.

The damage was caused by twin tornadoes. It was documented in the Storm Data Publication as “two tornado clouds, about 100 yards apart and each making paths about 100 yards wide.” They had parallel paths that moved to the northwest into a residential area in Crestview.

In the early part of the path, the tornado damaged a home and a couple of sheds. It moved into a neighborhood with new, well-built homes. Five of the homes were severely damaged. Per the survey, some roofs were ripped off, walls were collapsed and a few homes were moved off their foundation. The tornado moved away from this area and onto the Caledonia school complex.

The tornado formed east of Bemis and tracked NE for 16 miles. It trekked through the southern part of Jackson. The Hollywood Shopping Center had severe damage. A funeral home near it was demolished except for interior rooms. 200+ homes were destroyed and 300 more had lesser damage. One of the hardest hit subdivisions was Orchard Hill.

It was deemed “The Night of the Tornadoes” – The most deadly tornado outbreak in Florida history occurred during the nighttime hours of February 22-23, 1998. A total of 7 tornadoes swept through the central parts of the state between 1055pm EST and 230am EST. The tornadoes were unusually strong. 3 of the 7 were rated F3. 42 people were killed and over 260 were injured. 3,000 structures were damaged, 700 destroyed. Today’s event was one I hadn’t heard of before: The Saragosa, TX F4, May 22, 1987. As I began to read the devastating stories surrounding this event, my heart was immediately broken.

Per the Storm Prediction Center, 8 tornadoes occurred on May 25, 2016. Half of those were in Kansas from an isolated supercell. The strongest tornado was a long track EF-4. It began north of Niles, KS and traveled for close to 90 minutes finally dissipating just west of the Dickinson and Geary County line. The estimated peak winds = 180 mph.

It was an F4 tornado that quickly passed through parts of Muskogee County and the town of Keefeton, OK on May 26, 1973. Eight frame homes and four mobile homes were destroyed. 100+ more suffered some sort of major to minor damage.

The Spencer, SD F4 tornado of May 30, 1998 was 1 of 5 tornadoes produced by one supercell that tracked about 30 miles. This destructive tornado had a path length of 14 miles and hit the small town of Spencer (population at the time of 320) destroying most of its 190 buildings. 6 people were killed and 150 were injured. The tornado was estimated to reach a width of a mile.
