July 11, 1929: Several tornadoes are recorded by Grazulis on this day. One was given an F3 rating. It moved through the Devil’s Lake Area in North Dakota. All buildings on a farm were destroyed. 18 people were injured along the path, 15 of which were members of a railroad crew. Their car was derailed.

On this day in 1969: ‘Space Oddity’ by David Bowie was released in the UK for the first time. It was timed to coincide with the Apollo moon landing but had to be re-released before it became a hit, later in the year in the UK (but not until 1973 in the US). Bowie would later revisit his Major Tom character in the songs ‘Ashes to Ashes’, ‘Hallo Spaceboy’ and possibly the music video for ‘Blackstar’. On this day in 2017: A very large, high-end EF2 tornado moves through rural Traill County, North Dakota during the evening of July 11, 2017. This tornado snapped trees and destroyed several farm buildings along its path, with peak winds estimated at 135 mph. There were no injuries or fatalities.
