On this day in 1943, a surprise hurricane struck Galveston, TX. Due to World War II, weather reports were censored, so there was no warning of its approach. A wind gust of 132 MPH was measured. Nineteen people were killed. Lieutenant Colonel Joe Duckworth and Lieutenant Ralph O’Hair flew an AT-6 Texan into the eye of the hurricane, becoming the first person to fly into the center of a hurricane. Source.
