Tornado Talk Summary

On this day in 1990, a major tornado outbreak ripped across the plains. Two tornadoes were rated F5, one hit Hesston, KS, and the other hit Goessel, KS. We detail both of these violent twisters in our full summary here

March 13, 1922: A possible F2 tornado moved 4 miles across the west side of Sulphur, OK. 50 buildings (mostly homes) were damaged or destroyed. The county courthouse lost its roof. Barns were leveled on a farm NW of town. Three were killed and 40 injured.

Twister From The 2000s

On March 13, 2021: A large, wedge, tornado tracked for 21 miles from near Happy, TX, to Palo Duro Canyon. Several homes sustained minor to moderate damage, and a cellphone tower and several power poles were snapped. Source

“The Storm of Century” crippled much of the eastern US from Alabama all the way to Maine with blizzard conditions from March 12-14, 1993. 318 people were killed. On the 13th, it spawned a derecho, that moved across Florida, causing widespread damage and 11 tornadoes. Source

The driver was thought to have been trying to escape from the police when the accident happened. Radar of the Day

What was likely an extremely powerful tornado crosses through open terrain near Washburn, Texas on March 13, 2021. A few small power poles were snapped and a couple outbuildings were destroyed, while a semi was pushed over on Highway 287.
