The month of May in 1957 was very active. Per the NWS Paducah, approximately 231 tornadoes were reported. The Storm Prediction Center shows 18 on May 21. One of the strongest was later rated F4. The town of Fremont, MO was devastated. May 21, 1918: A possible F5 tornado crossed 37 miles through parts of Crawford, Carroll and Greene Counties in Iowa. “Twenty or more farms were devastated, and debris was carried for miles.” Near Carroll, a couple died in their home. “Another couple were caught in a buggy racing home, north of Churdan, and was killed.” Grazulis denotes that mattresses were carried two miles and “foundation of homes and barns were left bare.”

On this day in 1949 an F4 tornado tracked for 10 miles through parts of Crawford County, IL, and Sullivan County, IN. In Palestine, IL, three homes were destroyed and 20 were damaged. Four people were killed as a restaurant was leveled, and one of the bodies was recovered from the top of a tree. Source.
