Tornado Talk Summary

The month of May in 1957 was very active. Per the NWS Paducah, approximately 231 tornadoes were reported. The Storm Prediction Center shows 18 on May 21. One of the strongest was later rated F4. The town of Fremont, MO was devastated. Per Thomas Grazulis in Significant Tornadoes, “Only seven homes were left in tact in Fremont, with possibly F5 damage to homes, schools, and businesses on the east side of town.” Read the full summary here

May 21, 1918: A possible F5 tornado crossed 37 miles through parts of Crawford, Carroll and Greene Counties in Iowa. “Twenty or more farms were devastated, and debris was carried for miles.” Near Carroll, a couple died in their home. “Another couple were caught in a buggy racing home, north of Churdan, and was killed.” Grazulis denotes that mattresses were carried two miles and “foundation of homes and barns were left bare.”

On this day in 2011, an EF3 tornado struck Reading, KS. One person was killed, and five were injured as several homes and buildings were ripped apart.  Source.

On this day in 1949 an F4 tornado tracked for 10 miles through parts of Crawford County, IL, and Sullivan County, IN. In Palestine, IL, three homes were destroyed and 20 were damaged. Four people were killed as a restaurant was leveled, and one of the bodies was recovered from the top of a tree.   Source
